New Media Lesson #1

Three simple steps to shooting video with your handphone:

1. Decide what you want to shoot.
2. Press capture.
3. Hold still.

Don't pan, don't zoom. Just hold still. Somehow this makes your video look professional.

Eija's getting the hang of FB

My friend Eija, who had been resisting joining Facebook since time immemorial, finally succumbed to it a few weeks ago. While nothing much happened since, yesterday I saw that she was getting the hang of updating her status. This was what she wrote as of April 21:

It's a goddamn novel.

Wrote a whole story on me iPhone

I was supposed to hand in a Thingamajiggy piece on Monday. Told the office I would send it by email. I didn't actually have Internet access at home but I was testing a P1 Wimax product so I thought I could use that. Unfortunately, I learnt that same morning that my area was not covered by the P1 service.

In desperation, I turned to my iPhone for help. I wrote a whole Thingamajiggy piece on my phone that day and mailed it via 3G to the office.

My verdict: It can be done of course, this writing stories on the iPhone. At the same time however I don't want this to be a regular thing. It's quite painful, you see; my eyes were really affected after squinting for a few hours on the small screen.

So all things considered, the iPhone is a nice computer to have lying around the house but for real work, you still need a full-fledged computer.

Bukit Gantang by-election

Came back yesterday from the Bukit Gantang by-election. Completely exhausted; my colleague Izwan and I were there for more than a week starting from the nomination day. I also camped for two straight days under the sun in front of the Kamunting detention centre waiting for the release of the ISA 13.

But it was a fruitful outing. We learnt all sorts of things about applying New Media in reporting. Izwan's getting good at video editing. I got to try Coverit Live for the first time in the field.

So what exactly did we learn? That's for next time. Btw, this post was created on my iPhone.
